Latest guess on BSkyB Digital
.........................................................
It now looks like the Receivers for BSkyB 's digital service **will**
receive free-to-air (fta) transmissions.
However,it is likely that this will require a valid (subscriber's) smartcard
to be inserted first. This will trigger the receiver to allow fta
transmissions
(unless Sky Digital's multiplex has been selected,in which case the card
will be needed for decryption anyway!).
There will NOT be a pcmcia slot i.e. sky will use it's own encryption
system
and not a standard format CAM (conditional access module).
CAM's on open market
.............................................
At least one supplier to the satellite trade is now starting to sell Irdeto
CAM's
(which can be used with the Nokia 9200 receivers which they sell -the 9200
doesn't come with a CAM but does have a pcmcia slot).
The trade price is in the region of 55UKP + vat.
If anyone knows of suppliers of other (non-Irdeto) CAM's like
Seca/Mediaguard
or Conax (used by Multichoice Nordic) ,please email me details.
For those who haven't seen recent Usenet posts on the subject,Nokia will
soon
release their 9600 digital IRD which has 2 CAM slots.
There was also a widely publicised hack of Irdeto cards a few weeks ago.
The pirate cards mostly used Cop processors & code for them was
supposedly available on various internet sites.
I did not see any code based on a Pic processor card. Some people posted
news (& url's) of pic code but all reports I saw suggested that this was in
reality
the cop code.
About 10 days ago,MultiChoice ECM's many of these pirate cards;I'm not
sure whether any real working pirate cards still exist.
Further info welcomed.
That's it for now.
