TV2: THE DEBATE ENDS?

     After weeks of a long debate it is (almost?) finaly decided that the
Hungarian state television's second channel, the TV2 will move to the
Eutelsat Hot Bird 3 satellite, beacuse of the two new nation wide
commercial network wich will take the present terrestrial transmitters of
TV2.

     The debate about TV2's move begun when some of the "experts" has
told to ORTT (The National Radio and Television Commission) that the
majority of the private satellite receiver will not be able to receive
the upper frequencies of the Hot Bird 3 satellite, thus TV2 will lose
most of its viewers.

     Well, this is true in a certain point of view, but let me calculate
a bit for you, beacuse it is not a technical problem! In Hungary there
are 3.5 million television households at the moment and more then 1.6
million of it are connected to some cable system. That leaves 1.9
million, where you can count around 500 thousand households with private
dishes.

     Ok, now think about how many dishes are receiving Astra and how many
of them are capable to receive both Astra and Eutelsat. Let us give a
good 50 percent, which leads to 250 thousand households, where
approximatly 50 are capable to receive the upper frequency band and 200
thousand are not.

     Now let us make a summary of this: 1.6 millions are able to view TV2
via cable, 50 thousand via satellite from the 3.5 million. As we
predicted 450 thousand household have technical difficulties receiving
TV2 via Hot Bird and 1.4 million are not even have a satellite receiving
equipment. So the main problem is not with the upper band of the Eutelsat
Hot Bird 3, but the TV2 being on satellite and not on a nation wide
terrestrial network.

     If ORTT - for some odd reason - would change its mind about TV2's
move to satellite then the withdrawal would cost 1.5 thousand million
Hungarian Forints (HUF), which is approximatly 7.5 million USD. Hopefuly
that will not happen. By the way, the convertion of those receivers which
are not capable to receive the upper frequency band of the Eutelsat Hot
Bird 3 satellite would cost 10-12 thousand HUF for each, which is less
than 60 USD.

TV2: A VITA VEGET ERT?

     Tobb heti hosszu vita utan vegre (vegleg?) megszuletett a dontes a
TV2 muholdra kerulese ugyeben, igy - az eredeti terveknek megfeleloen - a
Magyar Televizio masodik csatornaja, a TV2 az Eutelsat Hot Bird 3-as
muholdra kerul, tekintettel arra, hogy a TV2 altal jelenlegi adohalozatat
a szeptemberben indulo ket uj kereskedelmi csatorna veszi at.

    A TV2 koruli vita akkor kezdodott, amikor egyes "szakertok" kozoltek
az ORTT-vel (Orszagos Radio es Televizio Testulet), hogy a muholdvevok
nagy resze nem tudja majd venni a Hot Bird 3-as muhold felso
frekvenciait, es ezert a TV2 elvesziti nezoinek nagy reszet.

     Egy bizonyos szempontbol ez igaz is, de engedjek meg, hogy
utanaszamoljak egy kicsit, mert ez technikai problema. Magyarorszagon
jelenleg 3,5 millio televizios haztartas van, melybol tobb, mint 1,6
millio csatlakozik valamilyen kabeltelevizios rendszerhez. Igy aztan
marad 1,9 millio, ahol kb. 500 egyeni muholdvevo lehet.

     Most gondljunk bele, hogy hany muholdvevo veszi az Astra muholdat es
mennyi kepes az Astra es az Eutelsat egyideju vetelere. Adjunk erre egy
jo 50 szazalekos eselyt, ami 250 ezer haztartast eredmenyez, melybol 50
ezer kepes a magas frekvenciasav vetelere es 200 ezer nem.

     Keszitsunk egy osszesitest minderrol: a 3,5 milliobol 1,6 millio
nezheti a TV2 musorat kabelen keresztul es 50 ezer muholdon keresztul.
Becsleseink szerint 450 ezer haztartasban technikai problemak miatt nem
kepesek a TV2 vetelere es 1,4 millio haztartas nem is rendelkezik
muholdvevovel. Epp ezert a legfobb problema nem a Hot Bird 3 magas
frekvenciasavjaval van, hanem azzal, hogy a TV2 nem a foldi orszagos
halozaton lesz elerheto, hanem muholdon keresztul.

     Ha barmilyen fure okbol az ORTT megis ugy dontene, hogy nem lesz TV2
muholdon, akkor a transzponderberlet visszavonasa 1,5 milliard forintba
kerulne. Remelhetoleg ez nem tortenik meg. Egyebkent azon vevok
atalakitasa, melyek nem alkalmasak a Hot Bird 3 magas frekvenciasavjanak
vetelere, ugy 10-12 ezer forintba kerulne.
