PRICE HIKE FOR TELEPIÙ SUBSCRIPTIONS
In parallel to the relaunch of Telepiù's digital satellite package, changes
have also been announced to the content and the prices of the various
subscription packages. The most important change is that new subscribers
are being offered the possibility of leasing a digital satellite receiver,
which has so far been the most expensive part of the reception system. Up
till recently, subscribers could only buy the receiver (cost: around 2,000
DEM), but now they only need to pay around 100 DEM for the satellite dish,
since the monthly cost for leasing a digital box is already included in the
price.
The first package offered to subscribers is called "Premium" and is made up
of the Telepiù Bianco, Telepiù Nero and Telepiù Grigio channels. The
monthly cost is 64 DEM (includes the lease of the digital box) or 50 DEM
(without the digital box). The "Basic" package comprises more than a dozen
thematic channels: Bloomberg, Cartoon Network, Discovery Channel, Hallmark
TV, Canale Meteo, Marco Polo, Bet on Jazz, MTV, BBC World and CNN
International. By the end of the year several new channels will join this
package, including Match Music, Canal Jimmy and Planet. The cost - 43 DEM a
month (with digital box) or 29 DEM (without digital box).
Viewers that want both the Telepiù channels and the thematic channels will
have to subscribe to the "Superpremium" package. They will have to fork out
83 DEM a month (includes the lease of a digital box) or 69 DEM (without
digital box). As of this month, three new movie channels have joined
Telepiù's digital bouquet on the HOT BIRD satellites. They are Cine Cinema
1, Cine Cinema 2 and Cine Classics and they are offered only to subscribers
who choose one of the above mentioned packages. If a new subscriber chooses
the thematic channels, the movie channels will be included in the so-called
"Superbasic" package, which costs 53 DEM a month (includes digital box). If
a subscription to the other packages is chosen, the additional film
channels will cost 18 DEM a month. There is another optional channel,
Seasons which is dedicated to fans of hunting and fishing (it will cost an
additional 10 DEM).
Finally we come to the sports offer. Subscriptions to the live coverage of
Formula 1 races on 6 channels is offered only to viewers who subscribe also
to the "Premium" or "Basic" packages. A subscription to all the seasons
games of your favourite football team in the Italian Serie A costs 768 DEM
(with digital box) or 600 DEM (without digital box), while the subscription
for only the away-matches costs 528 DEM/360 DEM.

RAI PRESIDENT IN FAVOUR OF DIGITAL ALLIANCE
At a recent debate on the future of telecommunications in Italy, the
president of RAI, Enzo Siciliano expressed his full support for an Italian
digital alliance formed around the pay-TV network Telepiù.
Siciliano who has always been in favour of international alliances in the
media field, declared that "the market would not support two digital
platforms, which means that an alliance with Telepiù is not only
indispensable but also of strategic importance". He expressed apprehension
that the French company Canal Plus (owns a 90% stake in Telepiù) does not
ask an outrageous sum for selling a 45% stake and does not insist on
keeping control of the day-to-day management of the Italian pay-TV network.

TELECOM ITALIA TO LINK VIA SATELLITE FIAT DEALERS
The Italian state telecommunications operator Telecom Italia and the
automobile giant Fiat have signed a deal which will enable to link up all
the European dealers of Fiat automobiles and Iveco trucks. The contract
stipulates that Telecom Italia will provide the necessary satellite links
needed to connect the more than 3,000 dealers. The satellite system has
been projected upon technical specifications made by Fiat and uses the VSAT
technology (Very Small Aperture Terminal) which offer a choice of
specialised services.
Initially, the system will be used for data transmission between the
various dealers and at a later stage will include Business TV applications,
as is already the case with Fiat dealers in Italy and France.
The Business TV service enables video transmissions (the launch of new
products, advertising campaigns, demonstrations) via satellite which can be
received live and simultaneously by all local representatives.
Finally, the deal also commits Telecom Italia to provide to the Fiat
dealers the equipment needed to receive other multimedia services such as
Intranet.

LIVE ITALIAN LEAGUE FOOTBALL ON TURKISH TV
The Turkish satellite channel TGRT has bought the TV rights to Sunday night
Italian football league matches for the season '97-'98. Every Sunday at
20:30 hours, TGRT broadcasts live and unscrambled (!!) one of the more
interesting matches which is in fact the same game carried live by Telepiù
on its Premium channel. TGRT broadcasts via the EUTELSAT II F2 satellite
(10 degrees East), frequency 11.095 GHz/Ver.

NEWS IN BRIEF
- During the recently concluded Venice Film Festival, RAI signed a
three-year deal with Polygram, which gives it the exclusive Italian TV
rights to the movies produced by this studio. Among the movie titles that
will be shown are: "What dreams may come", "The borrowers" and "Bean".
- The Holy See has chosen Telecom Italia to be the exclusive supplier of
telecommunication and data services for the Jubilee Year 2000. The Italian
telecoms giant was chosen among several global telecoms operators.
- The start of RAI's DAB service has been postponed after the year 2000.
The reason is that the reception equipment is still very expensive (around
2,000 DEM), which is still too much for the huge majority of consumers.
