- Hot Bird 2 Launch

INTRODUCTION
------------
Ten minutes after coming home from a business trip I was able to watch
the Telepiu DStv txm on HB-1, 11.345 GHz, H, Symbol Rate 27500, FEC 2/3,
in the clear, using my Panasat 520 IRD. 

Sorry that I din't have more time to gather other news and info. From
tomorrow the usual format.

HOT BIRD 2 LAUNCHED
-------------------
Eutelsat's $200 million worth Hot Bird 2 satellite was launched by a
Lockheed Martin Atlas 2A today, at 21:47 CET, from launchpad 36B at the
Cape Canaveral Air Station, after been delayed for nine days. The
satellite will be positioned at 13 East, co-positioned with the Eutelsat
II-f1 and Hot Bird 1. Satisfactory telemetric data from the satellite
could be received from the monitoring ground stations. As per Eutelsat
technical information will the satellite be operational before
Christmas, due to the new method of txpr testing during positioning. 

>From the available 20 txpr, most probably only 4 frequencies can be
received in the Middle East:

All other txpr transmit in the superbeam modus, which will have an
expected maximum EIRP of 30 dBW, and will produce hardly viewable
pictures in the Middle Eastern Countries. Most of them are transmitted
anyway in MPEG-2 modus.
The widebeam can be received with EIRP's between 40 dBW and 46 dBW,
depending on location. A focussed beam is directed to the Gulf area
which will receive 42 dbW. Expect about the same signal strenght as
received from the Superwide Beam of HB1.
