Already for the very long time I started to notice that in popular
satellite positions unknown and unlisted Russian-speaking channels with
good programming appear.
After a very strong wind, my 2.4m Jonsa prime focus dish was damaged, the
wind made it look little bit "down" comparing with what was before. During
scanning of satellite frequences at 19 deg. east (Astra position), I found
a quite powerfull signal
at 11.322 H. I started to move my dish eastwards and soon the picture
became exellent. The sound was on 6.50 Mhz, Mono, J17. Later I found out
that it is "Persey" cable TV station of South Region of Moscow (I'm located
in the Eastern region, not far from "Ostankino" tower). First, after being
found by me, the channel consisted of really cool programming - commercial
Hollywood movies dubbed in Russian (from "pirate" videocassettes), Disney
cartoons (from VHS videocassettes too), MCM and MTV musicvideos.
Later, the experiment was repeated with small, 0.9m offset dish. But it was
quite enough to get a high-quality picture. The dish looked "to the Earth",
since this signal comes from somewhere below the geostationary orbit.
While scanning frequences on "brand-new" position, I found "Reuters
Television Moscow" feed on 11.850 V. Also, there were some "ITN Moscow"
testcards.
Nobody of my friends in Moscow repeated this experiment, so if you live in
Moscow and want to repeat this experiment, please send the results to
greatdx@usa.net
Cable channel of South Region of Moscow is a real "rival" to NTV Plus,
especially after it's encryption.

Surely, most of terrestrial NTV's viewers remember, how hosts of
"Vremechko" news program joked each time before advertizing went on air.
It's likely that most of NTV Plus viewers and subscribers will not like the
following. NTV Plus channels will probably choose other way, then
well-known TV1000 and Filmnet, which do not insert commercials into their
programming. I have already noticed the commercial of Russian newspaper
"AiF" after Sport-News programms on NTV Plus Sport.
Well, who knows, probably soon this freshly-built pay-tv station will
interrupt interesting movies with boring "Snickers" commercials or other
crap.

I'm absolutely sure that time for digital satellite tv came already long
ago. And everybody, besides Russian satellite companies, seem to understand
it. It's almost impossible to buy a digital reciever in such companies.
Don't take following words as
an advertizement, but I think that the best digital reciever nowdays with
maximum possibilities is Nokia d-box, which is created for German DF-1
package. Understanding that the time has came, I decided to buy it.
But it turned out to be a difficult task - to find a d-box in Moscow. I
took "Yellow pages" (the satellite companies list published by one russian
satellite magazine), and started making phonecalls to all of compaines
listed there. I got lots of different replies, but I never heard words like
"Yes, sir ! D-boxes are here ! Come right now
and buy!". Often answers were: "Get lost! We are not dealing with
digital!", "No, we are not dealing with Nokia!", "probably we will sell
them, but we don't know when".
The most shocking was the answer in "V-LUX" company: "we will not deal with
digital sat-tv in following 1000 years!". Well, well, let's hope that this
company, being really a dinosaur-representative of the stone age, will be
able to offer a satellite reciever built from such stones ... "Universal"
company, after selling some of Nokia d-boxes, surely calmed down and is not
hurrying to deal with them next weeks.
So, now let me describe the situation with companies, where the answer was
maximum close to "Yes", but still not "yes". "Universal-complex", which has
bad attitude to clients, sold them shortly ago, but now they offer to
pre-pay without any guarantees and wait. I didn't order in this company,
because I ordered in other, "Navigator", and they didn't do the job well,
too. They sold a d-box prepared for me to another man just on the day I
waited for and was going to pick up on!
Well, so if you're a real sat-freak and DXer, better travel to Europe, and
better to Germany, where you will be able to buy a d-box without huge
delays, without problems and 2-3 times cheaper then in Moscow.
