During last week, Moscow's "Krasnaya Presnya" exhibition center hosted
the TRBE '97 exhibition, which was aimed to become a Russian analog
of Amsterdam's IBC, entirely devoted to professional broadcasting
equipment.
But still, some stands carried Direct-To-Home products. New models
of digital recievers/decoders were presented by Nokia, Philips and Sagem.
Sagem company also tried to attract the interest of visitors by
it's developed Nagravision analogue encryption system, but, of course,
major interest was towards digital products.
Philips presented several recievers to be used for Canal Satellite
Numerique
reception, and also the hit of the exhibition - the Cryptoworks PCMCIA
conditional access module. At the stand of Philips all the viewers could
see this module working in a brand new Nokia Mediamaster 9600 reciever,
which is the only universal reciever at the moment that can use
different CAMs for pay-tv package decryption.
Also, a very interesting stand was presented by RTR-Signal company,
which presented the first ever digital package for Russian viewers.
During the exhibition, the transponder of RTR-Signal on Intelsat 604 at 60
East was used to broadcast 6 channels: RTR, The Culture Channel, The
Children's Channel,
The World of Adventures, The Detective Club and a live feed from TRBE show.
Using the red menu of a simple Nokia D-box one could recieve all these
channels
by entering Video, Audio and Synchro PIDs.
According to RTR-Signal, in general the package will be devoted to cable
operators,
but they also say that DTH reception will be possible. The most interesting
thing
about the entire project is the fact that the package will never be
encrypted.
RTR-Signal wants no fee from viewers for its channels. So this may
mean they have chosen the Italian way (let me remind you that RAI
is already broadcasting its 3 thematic channels in MPEG-2/Clear
via Hot Bird 2).
Unfortunatelly, after closing of the exhibition, all the channels exept RTR
were
temporarily taken out of air. Regular broadcasting by The Childrens Channel
and The Culture Channel is planned to be started by the end of 1997,
The World of Adventures will start in early 1998, and The Detective Club
is expected in mid-1998. During the second stage of development,
broadcasting through Yamal-200 satellite is planned. Yamal-200 will be
located
at 90 East, and will help RTR-Signal to conquer the East-Russian market.
So, at least NTV Plus has a rival. Now Russian viewers can make a choice -
to pay always growing NTV Plus subscription fee, or enjoy at first 5 (later
- more)
unencrypted digital channels just by purchasing a digital reciever.
