And now the news:
---------- Microsoft's pay-TV plans

UK pay-TV channel provider (and Investor) Flextech is in talks with
Microsoft about forming an interactive television alliance. Sources
suggest that Bill Gates is planning a UK rival for the BskyB and British
Telecom backed venture, British Interactive Broadcasting, which is
currently subject to an EU monopoly investigation. BIB which aims to
provide home shopping and banking services via the television set, was
to have bankrolled subsidies for BskyB's digital satellite set-top
decoders, but the EU has cried foul. A Microsoft alliance with
Flextech, a firm with many irons in the BBC's multichannel fire, would
allow the software house to become a broadcaster, much as it has in the
US with MSNBC.
---------- Eutelsat Digital Platform Launched
(source: UK Satellite Control, copyright UK Satellite Control)
Eutelsat had launched the first of a number of digital satellites for
multiplexing television and multimedia services. Both services and
current providers will be able to select from multiple digital gateways
throughout Europe with full multiplexing facilities and DVB uplinks. The
first Eutelsat platform is already operating as a joint venture between
Eutelsat and Rome based uplinker Telespazio, and is currently delivering
a package of international digital television channels to cable
headends, collective and direct-to-home antennas.
