Austria To Open Airwaves
VIENNA, Austria, 97/02/21 (TS) -- One of the few remaining Western
European countries that maintains a public television monopoly will soon
allow private broadcasters to offer services. Austria unveiled a draft law
on Wednesday that will permit private broadcasting and break the ORF monopoly.

Initially, the law will allow regional and local radio broadcasters to
begin services with no plans at present for a national commercial TV
service. What the new law will mean is a choice in local programming for
Austrians. Satellite television already beams a wide choice of German
language programming from Germany, but complete with local programming for
that country.
