Intelsat 801 To Launch Thursday
WASHINGTON, DC, USA, 97/02/26 (TS) -- The first of the next generation of
Intelsat satellites will be launched on Thursday. Intelsat 801 will be
carried on an Ariane rocket from Kourou, French Guiana, during a launch
window that begins at 7:16pm EST (0016 UTC Friday) to 8:10pm EST (0110 UTC
Friday). Launch coverage will be broadcast on Galaxy 3, transponder 15, at
95 degrees East.
The Intelsat 801 is the first of Intelsat's newest generation of
spacecraft - the Intelsat VIII series. The VIII series features high power
C-band as well as high power capacity at Ku-band. This high power, combined
with the capability to connect spot beams to global beams, makes these
spacecraft particularly well suited for several applications such as: SNG
(satellite news gathering) operation, VSAT (very small aperture terminal)
networks, compressed digital video and thin-route and remote
communications. In addition, the satellite - for deployment in the Indian
Ocean Region at 64 degrees E longitude - will provide high power voice/data
and video services.
