First Fox News, MSNBC Ratings Out
WASHINGTON, DC, USA, 97/02/27 (Shoptalk) -- Just because MSNBC and the
Fox News Channel, the all-news cable channels launched last year by
NBC/Microsoft and Fox, respectively, have refused to discuss audience
figures during their 'growing' months, that doesn't mean they haven't been
counting. The results of a three-week survey conducted by Nielsen between
Nov. 25 and Dec. 15 are currently circulating in New York...possibly to the
dismay of both cable outlets. In the unofficial survey, CNN averaged
309,000 cable households (0.4 rating-71 million subscribers) every 24
hours, with MSNBC averaging 18,000 (0.08- 21 million) and 8,000 (0.05- 15
million) for Fox News Channels. Numbers became much healthier in primetime
with CNN averaging 522,000 homes, MSNBC averaging 27,000 and Fox following
with 16,000.
