BBC Prime Hits 5m Subscribers In Europe
LONDON, England, 97/09/08 (TS) -- BBC Prime, the encrypted 24-hour
entertainment channel, broadcast across Europe now reaches over five
million paying subscribers in continental Europe, according to European
Channel Management (ECM), the commericial joint venture between BBC
Worldwide, Pearson Television and Cox Communications.

ECM markets and distributes BBC World and BBC Prime in continental Europe.

Wayne Dunsford, director of distribution and marketing, European Channel
Management, stated: "This is a significant milestone for BBC Prime. It
represents a 19 percent increase on subscriptions since this time last year
and a 68 percent increase since the channel was launched in January 1995.
With over five million subscribers in continental Europe and growing, the
channel is poised for even greater success and profitability over the
coming year."

The channel will gain even more subscribers from September 15 when it
joins the Via Digital package in Spain broadcast on the Hispasat satellite.
The package operators and BBC signed a five year deal for BBC Prime and BBC
World. The deal is the fourth digital satellite agreement for BBC World and
BBC Prime in Europe, the others with TPS, DF1 and Telepiu.
