LOTS OF LOSSES FOR US-MEDIA-GROUPS
- Problems with the German market
mcr Hamburg. American media companies make a lot of money, selling their
programs to German station, but they loose a lot of money with the stations
they operate in Germany. According to the news-magazine "Der Spiegel" these
losses add up to nearly 900 Million deutschmarks (DM). Some examples: Landmark
Comm. holds 45 percent of the German Weatherchannel, which was closed down
last month. VIACOM is 90 percent owner of endangered Nickelodeon, which made
losses of 117 Million DM. The company also lost 100 Million Marks with German
VH-1. Disney/ABC lost 227 Million Marks with it's shares of Super-RTL, TM-3
and RTL-2. Time-Warner lost 124 Million Marks with it's 49.8 percent share of
newsstation n-tv. News Corp. lost 150 Million Mark with 49.9 Percent of tv-
station VOX. The American companies have misjudged the complicated economic
and legal terms in Germany, sais Lutz Hachmeister from HMR Consulting in the
Spiegel.

PRIVATE STATIONS AGAINST PUBLIC DIGITAL TELEVISION
- Critic voiced
mcr Cologne. The German private television stations demand a limitation of the
digital television offers from public broadcasters ARD and ZDF. The privates
want, that ARD and ZDF should only be allowed to distribute their analogue
channels also in digital mode, they should not be allowed to offer new
channels. The demand was voiced by the VPRT, the union of private
broadcasters. The VPRT says, that it was not the business of ARD and ZDF to
operate special-interest-channels.

SAT-TIP
- New Episodes from Seinfeld
Very recent episodes from the hitcomedy-show Seinfeld can be seen every
Wednesday at 13:00 CET on Canal+ GUL. "It's a show about nothing", says
Executiv Producer and Leadcharacter Jerry Seinfeld. Ant that is true - but it
is very funny anyway. A bit older episodes are shown on TV2 Norge, right after
The X-Files on Thursdays at 22:35 CET.
