WAITING FOR THE COMMERCIAL CHANNELS

   It seems to be that there are four major players in the competition to
win the franchise of the two nation-wide commercial televison channels.
ORTT, the Hungarian controlling body of the radio and televison stations
has announced the tender on 10th of January. Applications should be
handed in April and the two new channels should start on 1st of September
this year.

   One of the probable winners is the MTM-SBS consurtium. They are
already producing programmes for the Hungarian Television (the state
broadcaster) and have the "headquarters" with technical facilities. If
MTM-SBS wins they will have a minimal number of base staff and outside
companies should produce programmes for them.

   An other competitor is the French TF1 in alliance with the
Westdeutsche Allgemeine Zeitung. They are not sure that their investment
will be recovered within 7 years. However TF1 is interested in the
Hungarian market, so there are chances that they will start a commercial
network in Hungary.

   The third company is the Central European Media Enterprises (CME)
represented by the 2002 Kft. in Hungary. They are already the major
shareholder in the Czech Nova Tv, which is by the way quite succesful,
but they also have interest in televison channels all around Slovakia,
Slovenia and Romania.

   The fourth competitor is CLT joined with UFA (a Bertelsmann media
company). CLT is opearating all of those RTL channels has other interests
in all over Europe. CLT was not really succesful in winning franchises in
other Eastern-European countries. We do not know if they are willing to
fight for a Hungarian channel or not.

A KERESKEDELMI CSATORNAKRA VARVA

   Ugy tunik, hogy negy nagyobb jatekos vesz reszt a ket orszagos
terjesztesu foldi csatorna koncesszios palyazatan. Az ORTT (Orszagos
Radio es Televizio Testulet) januar 10-en hiredette ki a palyazati
felteteleket. A palyazatokat aprilisban kell benyujtani es a ket uj
kereskedelmi csatornanak ez ev szeptembe 1-jen kell elindulnia.

   Az egyik lehetseges gyoztes az MTM-SBS konzorcium. Ok mar most
keszitenek musorokat a Magyar Televizionak es "szekhazuk" is van
technikai felszerelesekkel. Ha az MTM-SBS nyer, akkor egy minimalis
belsos allomannyal kezdenek a munkahoz es a musorok tobbseget kulsos
cegek keszitik majd.

   Egy masik versenyzo a francia TF1 a Westdeutsche Allgemeine Zeitung
vallalkozassal kozosen. Egyaltalan nem biztosak benne, hogy a befektetett
toke a becsult 7 ev alatt megterulhet. A TF1-et azonban erdekli a magyar
piac, ezert minden esely meg van arra, hogy kereskedelmi televiziot
inditanak Magyarorszagon.

   A harmadik vallalkozas a Central European Media Enterprises (CME),
melyet a 2002 Kft. kepvisel hazankban. Ok mar eleve tobbsegi tulajdonnal
rendelkeznek a cseh Nova TV-ben (mely egybkent egesz sikeres), de tobb
reszesedesuk talalhato szlovak, szloven es roman televizios csatornakban
is.

  A negyedik versenyzo a CLT es az UFA (a Bertelsmann media csoport
tagja) konzorciuma. A CLT mukodteti az RTL csatornakat es mas
erdekeltsege is van szerte Europaban. A CLT egyelore nem jart sikerrel
mas kelet-europai orszagok koncesszios palyazatain. Nem tudjuk, hogy
harcba szallnak-e egy magyar csatornaert, vagy nem.
