THE HEADLINES IN THIS 97.04.28 REPORT:

- AB-Sat fire
- W1 launch postponed
- French "601 Club" starts
- Bits & Pieces
WHAT DO YOU KNOW ABOUT THIS ?
-----------------------------
Nobody any comments concerning the rumours on ESPN Asia FTA on Panamsat
4, and the Discovery channel FTA on 13 East ?
At least I'm dissapointed about it...
ARABSAT 2B, 30.5 East, http://www.satcodx.com/a2b.html
----------
On 12.516 GHz, H, could the first carrier on the Ku-Band be observed on
this position. A kind of weak at first, but steadily increasing signal
strenght gave at the end, before ceasure that is, a spark free screen.
Audio subcarriers were not transmitted.
HOT BIRD 2, 13 East, http://www.satcodx.com/hb2.html
-----------
Groupe AB Sat premises were partially damaged by a fire which broke out
this week Transmission from the AB Sat digital DTH service was
temporarily halted.
AB Sat's digital transmission equipment and tape storage facility were
undamaged by the fire, although the satellite uplink facility sustained
minor damage and will have to be repaired.
All personnel were safely evacuated from the building. Four employees
were hospitalised for smoke inhalation and have since been released.

AB Sat has returned in between with their promotional transmisions on
transponder 52, 11.766 GHz, V. An on-screen message could be observerd
Fridayevening April 25th, in the French language, which is here briefly
translated, courtesy of Christian Lyngemark:
"You have been victims of an interruption in the reception of our
channels due to a serious fire in our main office building. AB Sat has
restarted transmissions in good 24 hours after the interruption. We have
been working all day and night to succeed. The 18 channels in our
bouquet will restart step by step. Don't hesitate to call us on
08.03.02.02.02."
HOT BIRD 5, 13 East, http://www.satcodx.com/launches.html
----------
The first Taiwanese satellite "ST-1" might launch with Ariane 5 in
February next year, and will be operational in June. Flight A503 would
be then the third, and final, qualification launch of the new Ariane 5
launcher.
And why this long introduction under the titel Hot Bird 5?
All of this means for Eutelsat, that the launch of Hot Bird 5 will take
place on the first commercial flight A504, scheduled to take place in
May 1998. Hot Bird 5 is ment to replace Eutelsat II-f1.
EUTELSAT W1, 10 East, http://www.satcodx.com/launches.html
-----------
The Atlas IIA launch of Eutelsat's first satellite of the W-24 series
form Cape Canaveral, Florida, has been postponed to a, not yet named,
date, most probably in January 1998. Instead the MLV 7 satellite (no TV)
is scheduled to take off as AC-109 on December 10th (source: Lockheed
Martin Schedule rev.25/04/97).
A delay in the satellites manufactering process is probably the cause of
the unfortunate re-scheduling.
INTELSAT 601, 27.5 West, http://www.satcodx.com/i601.html
-------------
A confirmation of the Sat-MidEast message from 97.04.25, concerning the
start of the French "Club 601" package on this satellite could be
received from Christian Lyngemark:
6 TV channels will belong to the bouquet: Canal+ Horizons, CFI, MCM
Africa, TV 5, AB Cartoon, and Euronews. Two audio channels will be also
there: RFI 3 and Radio Nova. Planete and La Cinquieme/ARTE won't join it
at the beginning, they still face problems with authoring rights.
The official launch of this package will take place on 12 May, on MCM
Africa's current transponder on 3.650 GHz, Rc. The bouquet will later
move to Intelsat 803, presumably in November. Tests of this bouquet will
take place the next two Wednesdays, 30 April and 7 May, 11.00-16.00
CEST.

PANAMSAT 3-R, 43 West, http://www.satcodx.com/pas3r.html
------------
Frequency 12.716 GHz, H was used for a Formula 1 race and final wrap-up
feed from Imola, San Marino, Italy. Audio subcarriers were available on
7.02, 7.20 and 7.38 MHz.

------------------
The break in transmission of the mailing during the last couple of days
was due to the installation of a new, intelligent, faster and more
powerfull, version of the automated mailserver "majordomo".
This server has become so clever, eledgedly, that if your e-mail address
is becoming unavailable or keeps sending error messages and return
mailings; it will then, automatically, unsubscribe you from this free
mail-service.
In case you fail to receive the SAT-MidEast mailings, just re-subscribe
in an e-mail to the majordomo server, as you did in the beginning (can
you still remember ?), do NOT send subscription requests to me, as that
will have no effect (exept an overworked, annoyed me).
Thanks for your understanding.
Best regards,
Henk C. Room / Sat-MidEast / Cairo - Egypt
