THE HAPPY CHANNEL
-----------------
The Happy Channel is the name of the first thematic satellite channel
produced by the largest Italian private TV network Mediaset. The new
channel is set to launch on March 8th and will form part of Telepiù's
digital package transmitted via the 13 degrees East orbital position.
As its name says, the program schedule will be made up of comedy series
and movies from Mediaset's huge program archives. Besides brought-in
programs, the Happy Channel will produce some of it's own programs.
This is only the first of several new thematic channels planned by
Mediaset and which are expected to launch in 1999. Among them are a
children's channel as well as two movie channels (an action and
adventure channel and a mystery and thriller channel).
STREAM BOUQUET
--------------
The multimedia subsidiary of Telecom Italia, Stream, has announced that
it will launch it's own bouquet of digital channels via satellite from
this May. The bouquet, which is currently only available via cable, will
be transmitted on the EUTELSAT HOT BIRD transponders leased by Stream.
Among the channels offered will be foreign channels CNBC, CNN,
Eurosport, Euronews, Cartoon Network and the Discovery Channel, as well
as the Italian channels TVL, Il Canale Viaggi, Digital Shopping Network,
Universal Italia and Team-TV (it will show programs produced by 12 local
TV stations). For reception of Stream's bouquet, a digital receiver with
an Irdeto CAM will be necessary.
RAI International
-----------------
As of March 2nd, the RAI International TV channel will for the first
time provide coverage to the African continent. The international
service of the Italian state broadcaster was launched back in 1995 and
currently operates two TV channels and one radio station. Up until now
the TV service has been available in North and South America and
Australia (where it is a pay-TV channel), while the second TV channel
which is free of charge is transmitted to Asia and the Pacific region. A
new program schedule is about to take effect and among the highlights
are "Opera Club", "Squisito "(devoted to Italian cuisine,)" Ciao bella
(a fashion magazine), "Na voce Na chitarra" (folk music from Naples)
and" Saluti dall' Italia" (correspondance from viewers). It has also
been decided to subtitle 5 news bulletins daily in English and Spanish.
According to the director general of RAI International, Roberto
Morrione, during the last year they produced 1,600 hours of original TV
programming (10% of the total programs aired). The budget of the service
amounts to 110 million DM, out of which 68 million is financed by the
Italian government while the remaining 48% is financed by RAI.
