Already for a long time I was interested in recieveing digital channels
from Intelsat 601, 27.5 west. But I was stopped by one fact. I measured the
quality of signal from this bird by watching CMT. And it has some small
"noise" - so, I thought that no digital reception will be possible. But
yesterday I found out that it is not so.
There are lots of rumors about DMX - Digital Music Express in Russia.
Everybody heard about it, but nobody listened to lots of radiostations,
separated by style, and with non-stop music (without DJ-s, commercials and
so on). Most of those who heard about DMX wanted to listen to it, but when
they found out that DMX is transmitted via ASTRA satellite system, they of
course refused to install 10m or bigger dish
to recieve these channels. So, before this time, Russia had no digital
radio.
But DMX is not the only package in Europe. There is also MCE, Music Choice
Europe, which transmits it's package of radiostations via Intelsat 601,
27.5 west using
Eastern Beam.
Yesterday, after pointing my dish to 27.5 west and turning on my Nokia
d-box I could listen this package !!! But before this happened, I did some
really hard work in the
"red menu". But the result ! About 30 radiostations in best possible
quality became avilable for listening ! The quality was really good. Total
list of stations I'm able to recieve, you can find above. I think, that's a
pretty good choice of radiostations which
can satisfy probably any musical taste. And you don't need "10m dish". It's
enough 1.6-1.8m dish in Moscow. And you don't need a MCE reciever, the
most universal MPEG-2 reciever - Nokia D-box - does the job perfectly.

When I was buying a Nokia D-box I thought that I'll never will have
problems with recieveing MTV. But it turned out another way. Last week both
MTV Germany and MTV UK became "hard encrypted" in Cryptoworks. From
VIACOM-package
you can now recieve in CLEAR only Bloomberg Information TV UK and soft
encrypted VH-1 UK (VPID:40A6 and APID:4080). To recieve MTV "without
problems", music fans from Russia have to point their dishes to Intelsat
707.
Also, on Hot Bird 2 Filmnet and Supersport from Greece started
encryption.
But in return, Russians are finally able to watch Discovery channel
(in clear MPEG-2,Hot Bird 1, 11.248 H, SR 5632, FEC 3/4, VPID 4488, APID
4460). But it's only recieveable via "red menu" - read a big article about

Long ago, just few days after STS have started it's broadcast, it was
declared that the channel will switch to MPEG-2 soon and will broadcast 4
versions for different time zones for direct re-broadcasting. STS switched
to MPEG-2 on march 1st, 1997.
According to regional companies, they get Scientific Atlanta decoders from
STS, so
this means STS is broadcasting in MPEG-2 PowerVu. I had no chance to
contact STS to confirm this, but I hope to contact them soon. If STS is in
unencoded PowerVu, it will be possible to recieve it with Nokia D-box.

I can't recieve C-band channels, but already for a long time there are lots
of rumors that NTV that appeared on Express at 14 west is very different
from terrestrial one,
for example, which broadcasts in Moscow. According to letters I recieve,
the difference is in movies, which are broadcasted after usual "Segodnya"
and "Vremechko" newsblocks. They are absolutelly different in comparing
with terrestrial NTV. I have no official information about all these
differences, but I think that NTV launched an international version of it's
main channel to replace usual newsblocks previously broadcasted from
Eutelsat II F3, 11.575 V.
