TDF-2 will be able to help GALS satellites

As you probably know, now there are 2 Russian satellites called GALS-1 and
GALS-2 in the position 36 East. NTV+ pay-TV package is broadcasted from these
satellites. The appearance of the other satellite will occur in that position
soon. It will be French TDF-2 satellite which has began a moving from its
former position 18.8 West to the new position 36 East.
Now EUTELSAT is the owner of TDF-2 satellite. TDF-2 was launched on 24
July 1990. Although this satellite has very strong signal in the center
of its beam - 63 dbW and 45 dbW on the edge of the beam, - it seems no need
to wait too much from it. The matter is the satellite has 7-years lifetime
and only 5 transponders with bandwith of 27 MHz each and one backup transpon-
der. There were a reports about failures in its behaviour before. So it's
likely there will be a situation when only 2 or 3 its transponders can work
properly.
According to latest information such transponders can be 11.804 Ghz,
11.881 Ghz and 12.034 Ghz. All its transponders work using right circular
polarisation. It is not clear now, will TDF-2 be used for the sake of the help
to NTV+ package or not. Presumably TDF-2 will be used as a reserve satellite for
NTV+ and GALS. And there is a big possibility that main NTV TV-channel will
be broadcasted in clear from one of TDF-2 transponders.
EUTELSAT wants to move own satellite EUTELSAT II F2 which is currently in
the position 10 East to the position 36 East after succesfull launch of its
EUTELSAT W1 satellite later. The position of 36 East is the one of EUTELSAT.
So we shouldn't exclude the situation that EUTELSAT let us to remember
about its rights.
First Russian TV-channel on HOT BIRD 1
--------------------------------------
First Russian channel have began a broadcasting from HOT BIRD satellite
since 8 August 1997. This one is so called "World Russian channel" (WRC).
Although the broadcasting goes in digital format via transponder 11.304 Ghz
(this fact signifacantly reduces the number of its viewers, of course) this
event can be considered as a symbolic one because this is the first Russian
channel ever broadcasted from one of HOT BIRD satellites. WRC is transmitted
as a one of the channel of French package on this frequency.
Some months ago Russian chanel NTV was transmitted via another EUTELSAT
satellite - EUTELSAT II-F3, but according a rumours it didn't lease a
transponder time. EUTELSAT gave an opportunity to NTV to broadcast one hour
per day as an exchange for using an advertisement time on NTV. That
advertisement was devoted to EUTELSAT, of course. The broadcasting of NTV was
finished after the end of the deal beetween EUTELSAT and NTV.
WRC is the channel for understanding Russian viewers who lives outside Russia.
This channel already broadcasts in analogue mode via Gorizont 26 (11 West)
for North American viewers.
The battle for Svyazinvest

The owners of 2 biggest TV channels in Russia - ORT and NTV - lost in
attempt to buy a shares of most powerful Russian telecommunication company
AO Svyazinvest. 25 % of Svyazinvest shares were sold by auction. All shares
were purchased by ONEKSIM bank from Moscow which could pay the biggest
price.
Although the government declared that all shares will be sold to the one
who will be able to pay biggest price, the owners of ORT and NTV tried to
reach agreement with ONEKSIM about fixing price of shares and division of
shares among each other.
Svyazinvest is the owner of biggest and most developing telephone companies
and all telecommunication market in Russia.
It is interesting that more than a half of sum which was paid by ONEKSIM
for shares was given by wellknown financial speculator George Soros. He
spends $980 million for Svayzinvest shares.
