BBC To Launch On DirecTV Latin America
LONDON, England, 96/08/05 (TS) -- Close, but not close enough. That's the
feeling of many north Americans after hearing the news that the BBC World
Service will launch it's BBC World channel onto the DirecTV service in Latin
America.

Venezuela, Brazil and Mexico will be the first nations to begin receiving
the 24 hour news channel, from September 1st, with the entire region,
including the Caribbean by the second quarter of next year.

"We look forward to providing viewers across Latin America with a high
quality news and information service they can trust," commented Jeff Hazell,
the station's marketing director in an interview with the Press Association.

The new deal will add to the audience the channel already enjoys in
Europe, Africa, Asia and Australia. There was no mention of a North American
service and recent reports suggest that plans to launch the BBC World, BBC
Prime or any other BBC TV service to the USA may have been forgotten.
