Record July For UK Cable Industry
  LONDON, England, 96/09/05 (TS) -- At 21.3%, the latest cable television
penetration rate is the highest yet recorded level for the July quarter,
with a year on year increase of 0.3%. July figures, released by the
Independent Television Commission, have historically reflected a seasonal
slump in television viewing interest.

  Other headlines from the ITC's statistics for 1 July are: 

  Cable service penetration - homes which take either cable television or
cable telephone or both - remains over 30%.

  Both broadband cable television and telephony services are now being
subscribed to by over one and a half million households throughout the UK,
with residential telephony lines outstripping television connections by a
further 150,000.

  There are now 114 operational franchises in the UK, almost 20% of which
have become active over the past year.
