UN Stops Iraqi Satellite TV Plans
NEW YORK, New York, USA, 96/10/15 (TS) -- The United Nations has ruled
Turkey cannot lease a satellite transponder to Iraqi. The chairman of the
Sanctions Committee, Tono Eitel, said the plans, "can not be considered a
civilian need."
Iraq had proposed to lease a transponder on Turksat 1C to beam programming
to neighboring countries and nations in Europe. Under the plans Iraq would
pay for the transponder in advance in US dollars. No equipment would need to
be shipped into Iraq under the plan.
