Intelsat Approves K-TV Purchase
WASHINGTON, DC, USA, 96/12/13 (TS) -- The board of governors of Intelsat
has approved the purchase of a ku-band spacecraft for the Asia Pacific
region. The Intelsat K-TV satellite, which will be located at 95 degrees
East, will be built by Matra Marconi Space. Its mission is similar to the
Intelsat-K spacecraft, the organization's first ku-band only craft, that
has been in orbit above Europe for some years.
"This spacecraft will have 30 Ku-band transponders and will be delivered
by year-end 1998," said Irving Goldstein, Intelsat Director General and
Chief Executive Officer in a company statement. "Indeed, this satellite is
a powerful addition to our global fleet," he continued, "allowing Intelsat
to enhance its provision of the newest video services, such as
Direct-to-Home and VSAT video services, to expanded areas including China,
India, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, and throughout the Asia-Pacific."
