EU BLOCKS MERGER OF DF-1 AND PREMIERE
- Future of digital television in Germany is unclear
mcr Brussels. The EU has said No, a definite No, to the planed merger of
digital television operators DF-1 and premiere in Germany. "The danger of
creating a monopoly is to high", said EU-Commissioner van Miert according to
Radioreports. DF-1 and premiere had changed their agreement, prior to the
decision, allowing other customers the use of their set-top-box (d-box).
Apparently that was not enough. 
Now the future of digital television in Germany looks gloomy. Both companies
alone do not have a sufficient number of subscribers to earn money. Rumors had
it last week, that DF-1-owner, the media-mogul Leo Kirch, is talking to News-
Corporations Rupert Murdoch.
