Now for the news:
COMOROS BECOMES 143rd MEMBER OF INTELSAT
Washington, D.C., 25 June 1998 -- The Federal and Islamic
Republic of the
Comoros today joined the International Telecommunications Satellite
Organization (INTELSAT) as its 143rd member-nation, designating the
"Société
Nationale des Postes et Télécommunications (SNPT) as its Signatory to
the
INTELSAT Operating Agreement.
The Operating Agreement was signed in the Treaty Room at the
U.S.
Department of State by Mr. Taoufiki Mbae, Director General of the SPTC,
accompanied by His Excellency Ali Toihir, Minister of Transport,
Tourism,
Post and Telecommunications. SPTC will hold an initial investment share
in
INTELSAT of 0.05 percent.
"Comoros is very proud to be joining INTELSAT," said Mr.
Toihir. "As an
island country, satellite communications are crucial to ensuring our
country's links with the rest of the world. We have been using the
INTELSAT
system as a non-member since 1980. Now, we look forward to further
developing Comoros' telecommunications networks to improve access to
basic
telephony, broadcast television and to establish Internet connections,
which
are all very important to growing our economy," he added.
According to Mr. Irving Goldstein, Director General and Chief
Executive
Officer of INTELSAT, "The formal participation of Comoros in INTELSAT is
a
welcome event. Not only are we proud to serve this country but it is
also
an integral part of INTELSAT's mission to provide quality, universal
connectivity to all areas of the world, giving them a lifeline to the
global
economy. Only INTELSAT provides this guarantee and the accession of
Comoros
reflects that."
INTELSAT owns and operates a global communications satellite
system. With
1997 revenues of more than US$ 960 million, the INTELSAT system provides
voice/data and video services to over 200 countries and territories via
satellite.
Ellipso Begins Satellite Construction Phase
Ellipso and its main backer Mobile Communications Holdings ordered
Boeing
to begin construction of the first two satellites in Ellipso's global
satellite system, in compliance with the first milestone in the
company's
Federal Communications Commission license awarded last year.
Boeing will design and manufacture the Ellipso satellites. In addition
to
starting construction of the spacecraft, Boeing will finalize and
validate
the design of the complete Ellipso system, including the space, ground
and
terminal segments.
Satellite subcontractors are expected to include Harris Corporation,
responsible for the Ellipso communications payload; Israel Aircraft
Industries and AEC-Able Engineering. In addition, Lockheed Martin
Management & Data Systems will be the ground segment contractor and L-3
Communications Corporation is responsible for the CDMA waveform
technology.
Ellipso plans to deliver mobile and fixed site voice and data through a
17-satellite constellation. Service is expected to start in 2000.
